University Council of Modern Languages

The University Council of Modern Languages (UCML) was established in 1993 and is the overarching national organisation which represents the interests of modern languages, linguistics and cultural and area studies in higher education throughout the United Kingdom, and works with corresponding bodies in other countries.

In addition to promoting education and research in languages, linguistics and area studies, our work also includes lobbying policy makers and actively encouraging increased take-up of modern language study through the Routes into Languages network. Our members include UK higher education institutions involved in language teaching and research, and subject associations in the relevant disciplines.
